ECML CLOUD RIG VIRTUALISATION USING DIGITAL TWINS
CASE STUDY
The scope of this project is to virtualise a signalling test rig by deploying it on Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure. The solution will leverage AWS cloud services to model, interface, and simulate complex signalling systems, enabling scalable, flexible, and accessible test environments. By transitioning from physical to cloud-based infrastructure, the project will support advanced system integration, efficient testing processes, and the long-term scalability of signalling test capabilities.
RIYADH METRO TUNNEL VENTILATION SYSTEMS
CASE STUDY
AEGIS Certification acted as the Independent Safety Assessor (ISA), responsible for overall project safety assurance from preliminary design through to the Defects Liability Period. The work was carried out in accordance with BS EN 50126, 50128, and 50129 standards, covering system engineering, safety assurance, and compliance across multiple subsystems.
EUROPEAN RAIL TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (ERTMS)
CASE STUDY
The Northern City Line signalling system was upgraded from traditional aspect signalling to ETCS Level 2, as part of the wider ERTMS rollout on the East Coast Main Line. This transition enhances safety, interoperability, and efficiency while aligning the line with European rail standards.
ETCS Test Rig Integration & Virtualisation
CASE STUDY
The East Coast Main Line (ECML) ETCS Test Rig Integration and Virtualisation project transformed a traditional physical signalling test rig into a fully cloud-based simulation environment. This enabled controlled, scalable validation of on-board and trackside sub-systems including RBCs, interlockings, and service management systems, while simulating train operations within a unified digital platform.
Project Management Assistance - NExTEO
CASE STUDY
The NExTEO project is a core part of the RER E westward extension (EOLE), introducing a new-generation train operating system to enhance traffic management and passenger capacity. IKOS supported SNCF Réseau and SNCF Mobilités throughout the programme, contributing to system design, phased deployment across both existing and new infrastructure, and coordination of technical and operational activities that underpin this major digital transformation of the Paris commuter rail network.
TPWS MK4 Upgrade Installation Design
CASE STUDY
IKOS was contracted by Thales GTS to deliver installation design for upgrading the Train Protection & Warning System (TPWS) Mk4 across six Translink vehicle types, including Classes 3000/4000 DMUs, Class 110 and 201 locomotives, DVTs, and Windhoff MPVs.
The project also included upgrading On-Train Data Recorders (OTDRs) to ensure compatibility with the new TPWS Mk4 system.
TPWS MK4, OTDR & Rollback Protection Installation Design For DVT
CASE STUDY
Chiltern Railways commissioned AEGIS to design the integration of TPWS Mk4 and OTDR systems across its fleet of DVT, 168/0/1/2, and 165/0 units. The upgrade replaced the legacy ATP system and introduced rollback protection for EMUs operating on London Underground infrastructure to maintain safety functionality.
Traffic Management Stystem IXL, RBC
CASE STUDY
Switzerland implemented the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) – ETCS Level 2 to strengthen safety and interoperability across both national and international rail networks. This large-scale rollout required alignment with stringent regulatory, technical, and operational standards.
Project Management - ETCS Deployment
CASE STUDY
The extension of Metro Line 11 from Mairie des Lilas to Rosny-Bois-Perrier spans 6.3 km and traverses five municipalities within Seine-Saint-Denis. The program incorporates both civil expansion and systems modernization, including:
Replacement of legacy MP59 (4-car) rolling stock with MP14 (5-car) trainsets. … Read More…
Project Management - ETCS Deployment
CASE STUDY
The 6.3 km extension of Metro Line 11 from Mairie des Lilas to Rosny-Bois- Perrier spans five municipalities and integrates major system upgrades. Works included the replacement of MP59 rolling stock with MP14 (5-car) trains, platform extensions, new passenger access points, migration to OCTYS Type 2 CBTC with lateral guidance, and commissioning of a new centralized control hub (PCC NG) in Bagnolet.
Freight Locomotive - ETCS
CASE STUDY
Network Rail is deploying ETCS Level 2 across its infrastructure, requiring all locomotives and rolling stock to be equipped with compatible onboard systems. As part of this transformation, 17 freight fleets operated by five Freight Operating Companies are being retrofitted with Siemens ETCS equipment.
Owing to the scale and complexity, the modifications were deemed ‘significant’ under Regulation 402/2013 (CSM-REA), requiring formal risk assessment and assurance.
TPWS MK4, OTDR & Rollback Protection Installation
CASE STUDY
IKOS acted as custodian of the GSM-R Technical File for Network RailTelecoms, managing updates and providing compliance consultancy for projects modifying the GSM-R network.
This includes defining compliance requirements, preparing certification matrices against CCS NTSN, EIRENE, MORANE, and ETCS SUBSET-093, liaising with assessment bodies (ApBo, NoBo, DeBo, VeBo), and advising on file structure to maintain accuracy and currency.
